Privacy policy for the Mutara app
This policy is for the Mutara app for Android, iPhone and iPad. The iPad app also runs on a Mac with Apple silicon. The app connects your device to a radio linking node, so that you can listen and talk. Date: 18 October 2026.
Summary
- The app sends data only to the node that you connect to.
- The app has no ads, no tracking and no analytics.
- We do not collect, keep, sell or share your data. We do not operate a server that the app sends data to.
The node that you connect to
You type the address of a node in the app. The app connects only to that node. It can be a Mutara node, or a node that accepts an IAX user. A person or a club operates each node. We do not operate these nodes.
The app sends these items to that node:
- Your user name and password or secret for that node, to sign in.
- Your voice, but only while you transmit.
- DTMF digits that you send, and the controls that you use, for example link and unlink, scan and the scan priority of each node.
The node operator can see this data and can keep logs of it. On a radio linking network, other stations can hear what you say. Ask the node operator about their own rules for data.
The microphone
The app asks for permission to use the microphone. The app uses the microphone only while you transmit: while you hold the talk button, or after you tap it to latch, until you tap it again or the time limit stops the transmission. The app does not record your voice and does not keep it.
Recorded clips
A Mutara node can record what it hears and keep these clips for a short time. The node operator decides this. When you play a clip, the app gets it from the node and keeps it only in the app's cache on your device. The app saves a clip to your files, or gives it to another app, only when you choose "Save clip" or "Share clip".
Data on your device
The app keeps your saved connections and settings on your device. The app does not send this data to us or to a cloud service. When you remove the app, the device removes this data.
- On Android, your passwords and secrets are encrypted with a key in the Android Keystore. The app turns off Android backup for its data.
- On Android, the app also keeps a small log of its audio events, for example when music pauses and starts again. The log has no audio and no voice. It stays on the phone.
- On iPhone and iPad, your passwords and secrets are in the Keychain, and they stay on this device only. Your other settings can be in your device backup, as for other apps.
Notifications
On Android, the app asks for permission to show a notification. The notification shows that the app is connected, so that Android keeps the connection open with the screen off. On iPhone and iPad, the lock screen shows the connection and the station that talks.
Children
The app is for licensed radio amateurs. It is not for children.
