Move from ASL3
You can try Mutara on the ASL3 node that you have now. Mutara copies the settings and does not change the ASL3 files.
Before you start #
- Mutara and ASL3 cannot operate at the same time. Both use UDP port 4569 and the USB radio.
- If you want to keep the ASL3 computer as it is, use a second SD card with Raspberry Pi OS for Mutara.
Switch the node to Mutara #
The installer finds ASL3 and asks if you want to switch. The beta guide gives the command. When you agree, the installer does these steps:
- It copies the ASL3 settings into Mutara.
- It shows the settings that it copied and the settings that it did not copy.
- It stops ASL3.
- It starts Mutara.
Result: Mutara runs with your node number and your node password. Open the dashboard and create the admin account. Then make sure that the settings are correct.
The installer keeps ASL3 safe:
- If Mutara cannot copy the settings, the installer stops before it stops ASL3. ASL3 continues to operate, and the installer says so.
- If Mutara does not start, the installer starts ASL3 again.
The installer did not ask
The installer asks only when it runs in a terminal. If it runs from a script, or over SSH without a terminal, it cannot ask. Then it installs Mutara but does not start it, and ASL3 continues to operate. The installer shows the commands that switch. To switch, use one of these commands:
sudo mutara-switch mutara
curl -fsSL https://mutara.wc8mi.net/get.sh | sudo sh -s -- --switch
To install Mutara and keep ASL3 in operation, use --keep-asl3 in place of --switch. To copy a different node, add --node and the node number, for example --node 2101.
Caution: sudo removes most settings of your shell. A setting before sudo, for example MUTARA_FROM_ASL3=yes curl ... | sudo sh, does not get to the installer. Put the setting after sudo: curl -fsSL https://mutara.wc8mi.net/get.sh | sudo env MUTARA_FROM_ASL3=yes sh.
What Mutara copies #
- The node number and the node password
- The callsign and the timers
- The courtesy tone
- The DTMF functions, the macros and the schedule
- The permanent links of the startup macro
- The entries for private nodes on other computers
- The USB radio settings (simpleusb or usbradio)
- The logins of IAX apps
Mutara only reads the ASL3 files. It does not change them.
An ASL3 install with several nodes
Mutara copies all the nodes. The node with the USB radio becomes the first node. Each other node becomes one more node of the same install. Read Nodes and modules. To make a different node the first node, read The ASL3 importer in the reference.
Switch back to ASL3 #
- Open a terminal on the node.
- Type
sudo mutara-switch asl3and press Enter.
Result: Mutara stops and ASL3 starts with its own settings.
To use Mutara again, type sudo mutara-switch mutara. If Mutara does not start, this command starts ASL3 again.
Note: Changes that you make in Mutara do not go back into ASL3. Each one keeps its own settings.
